PM: Democracy Underpinned by Press Freedom
Prime Minister Theresa May has again spoken of the importance of press freedom to a democratic society.
During Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday, Mrs May responded to a question about the Government’s role in defending the independence of the judiciary.
She said: “I believe and this Government believe in the independence of our judiciary, and the judiciary will consider that decision and come to their judgment on the basis of the arguments put before them. But we also believe that our democracy is underpinned by the freedom of our press.”
Following High Court’s ruling on whether the Government could use its prerogative powers to trigger Article 50 and coverage of the decision by newspapers, Mrs May said she believed it was important to have a free press.
