Local Newspaper Week 2017 Dates Announced
Organised by Local Media Works, this year’s Local Newspaper Week highlighting the power of local newspapers to make a difference to the communities they serve through campaigning will be held from 15 to 21 May.
Weekly and daily local newspapers across the industry will participate by showcasing their recent campaigning achievements which have benefited the local community in some way under the Local Newspaper Week Making a Difference banner.
Materials will be made available for local papers to use during LNW, in addition to their own coverage. Last year, local papers showcased their campaigning activity and ran articles from high profile supporters Nadiya Hussain and Ray Mears underneath the LNW banner.
To augment the industry-wide activity, 28 local newspaper campaigns which were entered into the Campaign of the Year category at Society of Editors Regional Press awards will be showcased on the LNW website and the public will be invited to vote for their favourite online during LNW.
The winner will be announced by News Media Association chairman Ashley Highfield at the awards on 19 May.
LMW chairman Craig Nayman said: “I would urge all local newspapers to participate in this year’s Local Newspaper Week to remind our readers, advertisers, politicians and other key audiences that we invest heavily in high quality and trusted local journalism which benefits local communities.
“By holding authority to account and shining a light on events that might otherwise remain hidden, local journalism helps shape the communities for the better and Local Newspaper Week is a celebration of that important democratic function.”
