Fighting Fake News: Local Press to Hold Interactive Trusted News Day
Local newspapers across the UK are to hold an interactive Trusted News Day inviting readers to quiz editors and journalists on how trusted local journalism is produced as part of the industry’s new campaign against fake news.
Part of the industry’s Fighting Fake News campaign, the Trusted News Day will be held on Friday (12 May) and will see readers invited to quiz editors on any aspect of the newspaper or local journalism through newspapers’ digital platforms.
Initiatives will include live blogs and question and answer sessions on social media, as well as quizzes for readers asking them about fake news and their views on local newspaper journalism. Readers will be encouraged to participate in the build-up this week.
Organised by Local Media Works, the local marketing arm of the News Media Association, Fighting Fake News has seen hundreds of local papers highlight their highly-trusted credentials through features, news stories, infographics and videos.
The campaign, which launched a week ago and will continue to run up to and through Local Newspaper Week (15-21 May) has prompted Prime Minister Theresa May to comment on the dangers of fake news on social media and the importance of a free press.
LNW will see the public invited to vote for their favourite local newspaper campaign from a showcase of 28 powerful Making a Difference campaigns with the winner announced at the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards on 19 May.
