The Press Awards To Return In 2023

DRAFT – SUBJECT TO FINAL SIGN OFF

The Press Awards, the annual celebration of Britain’s best journalism, are set to return in 2023 with a flagship central London event.

Dubbed the “Oscars of British journalism”, with a heritage spanning six decades, The Press Awards recognise excellence across 46 categories split into two distinct ceremonies – the National Press Awards for the national media and the Regional Press Awards for the country’s local and regional news brands.

The new event will be produced by Haymarket Media Group on behalf of the News Media Association and will take place at London’s Westminster Park Plaza hotel on 8 March. As well as long-standing categories such as Newspaper of the year, Front page of the year, Columnist of the year and the coveted Scoop of the year, new categories will recognise young journalists, digital-first initiatives and excellence in reporting of diversity.

The Press Awards were inaugurated in 1963 and have become recognised as the pinnacle of national and regional news journalism, fostering a friendly rivalry between newspapers and individual journalists who have vied for the prize over the decades, and showcasing the vital importance of independent journalism to our democratic society.

The eligibility period for the 2023 awards is 1 January 2021 to 30 September 2022. The awards will formally launch this week, with further information, a full list of categories and criteria and entry details available from the website

Owen Meredith, NMA chief executive, said: “These awards are the ones everyone working in news media today wants to win. They have a long and proud history, celebrating true excellence in the world of journalism, across print and digital platforms. At a time when access to trusted journalism has perhaps never been more important, The Press Awards bring our industry together to champion the importance of journalism to society and celebrate truly outstanding talent.”

Philip Swinden, managing director of Haymarket Business Media, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the News Media Association on their iconic Press Awards. We look forward to organising an exciting event that celebrates the best work in UK journalism — particularly during these tumultuous times where interest in local/national news and consumption levels across all channels has never been greater.”
