Tekin To Speak At Online Safety Bill Policy Event

Sayra Tekin will speak at an event looking at key issues for government media policy and regulation under a new Prime Minister and the importance of protecting freedom of speech within the Online Safety Bill.

The News Media Association’s director of legal will join panellists from Meta, BT and Lewis Silkin at the Westminster Media Forum event on 12 September, with the first session of the day chaired by Lord McNally.

The NMA has called for the publisher exemption from the new online safety regime to be strengthened during the passage of the Online Safety Bill, as Ministers have committed to do.

During the second reading of the Bill in April, then DCMS Minister Chris Philp MP said that the Bill will be amended to make sure that journalistic content cannot be removed from tech platforms until “a proper right of appeal” has taken place.

Giving evidence to the Online Safety Bill Committee in May, NMA  chief executive Owen Meredith said that although the government’s stated intention to have recognised news media publishers’ content outside the scope of the Bill, further amendments were required to achieve that.
