Rochdale Freehold Estate

The Manchester Evening News’ powerful exclusive on the deaths at the Rochdale Freehold Estate revealed the appalling conditions people were being forced to live in and highlighted the impact it was having on their community.

Reporter Stephen Topping visited dozens of homes on the estate in Rochdale, after the death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak was reported to a local coroner. The toddler had been exposed to damp and mould. His parents had previously complained about the living conditions, even before their son was born.

MEN learned that at least six other households had reported complaints of damp and mould, and three families had claimed that their children had been hospitalised with breathing difficulties between 2014 and 2020.

As a result of MEN’s investigation, a review of the homes has since been announced, to be conducted by housing association landlords.
