Ronan’s Law
2026The introduction of Ronan’s Law marked the successful conclusion of a sustained campaign by Iconic Media calling for tougher controls on the sale of dangerous weapons. The campaign earned the publisher Regional Campaign of the Year at the Society of Editors’ Media Freedom Awards.
The legislation, which restricts the sale of so‑called zombie knives, is named after Ronan Kanda, a 16‑year‑old who was killed in a case of mistaken identity while walking home. His attackers had been able to buy the weapons online with no age or identity checks.

Through its Express & Star title, Iconic Media worked closely with Ronan’s family, police and lawmakers to shine a light on the loopholes that allowed such weapons to be sold unchecked. The paper used its platform to build public understanding of the issue and maintain pressure for change, giving space to senior political voices as the campaign gathered momentum. Both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer wrote for the Express & Star as the proposed legislation came closer to becoming law.
The campaign demonstrated the power of local and regional journalism to drive national change – delivering justice for one family, while helping to improve public safety for communities across the country.
