Dates Announced for Local Newspaper Week 2018

This year’s Local Newspaper Week, which will see daily and weekly local papers come together to celebrate the role played by local papers in communities across Great Britain, will be held from 14 to 20 May.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year LNW, which is organised by Local Media Works, will see daily and weekly newspapers come together to highlight their ability to make a difference through powerful editorial campaigning, and the high levels of trust placed in local news media journalism by the public.

Local press in print and digital is the most trusted source for local news and information, way ahead of search engines and social media, according to recent YouGov research.

Commissioned by Local Media Works, the research found that local newspapers in print and digital are more than three times more trusted for local news and information than social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

Held at the start of LNW, the Making a Difference online public vote for the best local newspaper campaign of the past year will see members of the public invited to view a gallery of powerful local paper campaigns and vote for their favourite.

The winner of the vote will announced by News Media Association chairman David Dinsmore at the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards on 18 May.

Building on the initiative last year, a #trustednewsday will be held on 17 May during which local papers will use their various platforms to show their readers how trusted local news is produced.
