Faure Walker: Journalism Will Play Key Role In Tackling Pressing Challenges

Trusted journalism has a key role to play in tackling some of the most pressing issues we face currently such as the coronavirus pandemic and climate change, News Media Association chairman Henry Faure Walker will say in a piece for Journalism Matters.

In an article to be published at the start of the weeklong Journalism Matters campaign on Monday, Mr Faure Walker will highlight the immense value that independent journalism contributes to society through holding power to account and stimulating robust debate on key issues.

But he will warn that all this is under threat if prompt action is not taken to correct the imbalance between the tech platforms and news publishers.

Journalism Matters , the industry’s campaign to highlight the importance of journalism to democratic society, will kick off on Monday and run for a week, looking at key topics including climate change, state secrecy, and the abuse of journalists.

The annual campaign is coordinated by the NMA and sees local, regional and national news media titles join together to celebrate the various ways in which journalism makes a difference.

Activity on Monday will include the launch of the Making a Difference public vote for the best local and national news media campaigns of the past year.
